SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Hennepin County, Minnesota officials have sought residents’ input on its updated solid waste plan. The plan is scheduled to be submitted to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) in October this year.
The County’s updated solid waste plan comprises of proposals to improve curbside organics pickup. It also recommends pre-processing waste to keep recyclables out of landfills, limiting single-use items and developing a more sustainable purchasing policy. The deadline for submission of comments is September 5. The comments received prior to the deadline will be considered.

The plan includes three sections. The first section, otherwise known as the background section, sheds light on the amount of waste to be managed, the guiding county policies and the public’s involvement in plan development. The second section provides a description of the prioritized highest impact zero-waste actions from the plan. The third section, arranged by the categories and strategies in the metro policy plan lists out whether it is a required or optional strategy. Henepin County generated approximately 1.3 million tons of waste in 2023. Also, 43% of this waste was recycled or composted.
