Michigan sets recycling rate record for third year, grants $500k to Van Buren County

The state of Michigan has set record high recycling rate for the third consecutive year.

According to data from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, or EGLE, Michigan has steadily increased its recycling rate.

In 2019, the rate was 14.25%, which rose to 21% last year, and now over 23% this year.

Based on its current pace, officials estimate the state will reach its 30% recycling rate goal by 2029.

More than 330,000 tons of paper and paper products were recycled during fiscal year 2023, over 237,000 tons of metals, more than 67,000 tons of glass, and over 58,000 tons of plastics and plastic products.

This equates to every Michigan resident recycling over 140 pounds of cardboard boxes, milk cartons, soup cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and jars, food waste and other recyclable materials.

To further expand recycling in Michigan, EGLE granted more than $5 million in infrastructure grants throughout the state.

Van Buren County has received a $500,000 grant to enable the Van Buren Conservation District to partner with eight drop-off centers to increase recycling services.

The project focuses on increasing recycling capacity, efficiency, safety, and services for Van Buren County residents.
