SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The King County Soild Waste Division announced that the new Northeast Recycling and Transfer Station, which will be constructed in Kirkland, will provide the towns of Kirkland, Redmond, Woodinville, Sammamish, and unincorporated northeast King County with up-to-date recycling services. The old Houghton station will be replaced by the new facility.
The transfer station site decision was based on the final environmental impact statement (EIS), which was released last week. Numerous other criteria, such as cost and socioeconomic analysis, also had a role in the siting decision. According to County officials, the project's design phase is anticipated to start later this year.

In addition to offering expanded recycling services in support of Re+—a County initiative to recover about 70% of the materials currently being sent to the landfill—the proposed recycling and transfer station will provide additional disposal options, such as food and yard waste, helping to meet the climate goals.
According to Solid Waste Division Director Pat D. McLaughlin, the new Kirkland transfer station will offer county residents all of the most up-to-date recycling and disposal services. Many of the contemporary recycling and disposal services offered by more recent facilities are absent from the Houghton station, McLaughlin continued.
