France-based wire and cable producer Nexans says the low-carbon AC90 cable it manufactures and sells in Canada uses copper that includes at least 14 percent recycled content.
“In the ever-evolving world of electrical installations, Nexans sets a new benchmark with its innovative AC90 cable, uniquely designed to meet both environmental and practical demands,” says Nexans of what it calls its low-carbon product.
The European company, which has manufacturing plants in Montreal and in Fergus, Ontario, and Weyburn, Saskatchewan, in Canada, says its AC90 product offers “at least 10 percent CO2 savings compared to standard AC90 cables.”
The carbon emissions savings have been achieved in part because the copper conductor within the AC90 product is made with a minimum of 14 percent recycled content, says the firm, “underscoring Nexans' commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency.”
On its website, Nexans Canada says it sources the copper used at its rod mill in Montreal from a Glencore refinery adjacent to its Montreal location.
The firm says it also redesigned the cable’s jacket and insulation using a “premium compound” that reduces the embedded carbon.

The company says it has provided an environmental product declaration (EPD) for the AC90 cable that buyers can access by scanning a QR code on the label of spools.
“The carbon emissions associated with the product are also clearly displayed [on the EPD], allowing customers to make informed decisions about their purchases,” states Nexans.
Users of the cable also will find what Nexans calls “bright markings on the inner label of the AC90 cable spool,” designed to assist inventory management by showing exactly how much cable is left. “This easy-to-read indicator helps professionals confidently plan their next installation or purchase, ensuring they have the right amount of cable for the job,” states Nexans.
