North Little Rock residents frustrated as recycling piles up

North Little Rock residents have expressed their frustrations after waiting longer than usual for recycling pickup.

Debi Pearson is one resident who said Waste Management, the company in charge of recycling, has been letting her recyclable items pile up for weeks.

“They are supposed to empty it every two weeks, and they’ve not been here in the last month,” Pearson said. “And I just put two more baskets in and it's almost full now. They won't be back for another two weeks."

North Little Rock Mayor Terry Hartwick explained how they've gotten a lot of phone calls regarding the issue.

"We're getting a lot of calls because Waste Management raised their rates,” Hartwick said. “And now we haven't had a pickup in almost a month in some of the areas.”

Mayor Hartwick said that while his office has been getting lots of calls about the situation, there’s not much they can do.

He said it’s on Waste Management to fix the delays and added that an employee shortage is to blame.

"I've talked to Waste Management today and they're having staffing problems,” Hartwick said. “He says he's trying to work it out. He apologized."

We were unable to reach Waste Management about this issue, but Hartwick said they hope to have the problem solved by the end of this week.

Residents like Pearson explained how that would be welcomed.

"It's just hard on us as residents to keep up with the recycling and have our recycle bins overflowing,” Pearson said.
