Ogle County paint, oil and aerosol can recycling event is Aug. 14


OREGON — The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be hosting a latex paint, used motor oil and aerosol can recycling event on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to noon at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. 

This event is for Ogle County residents only and no permit is required. Identification will be checked upon entry to the event and a short survey will be taken.

The Illinois Recovery Group (IRG) http://www.illinoisrecoverygroupinc.com will be on site with their vacuum truck to collect and recycle used motor oil, anti-freeze, and used oil filters. There is a limit of 200 gallons per vehicle, and 55-gallon drums will be pumped out on site. 

All containers will be returned for reuse or proper disposal. Plastic containers with used oil or other automotive fluid residues cannot be recycled. There is no charge to residents for this service. For amounts over 200 gallons, contact the OCSWMD at the number below for information on direct service from IRG.

Earthpaint http://www.earthpaint.org will also be on site collecting containers of liquid latex paint for recycling. The OCSWMD will subsidize a portion of the recycling costs for residents.

The cost to recycle latex paint are as follows for up to 10 containers:  Quart, $1/container, gallon, $2/container and 5-gallon pail $8/container.

Residents will pay full price to recycle over 10 containers, which is: $2.50/quart, $5/gallon, and $18/5-gallon pail. Bring paint in original containers only, and do not mix paint together as then it cannot be recycled. 

Only liquid latex paint is accepted, no dried out containers or oil-based paints will be accepted.  Cash, card or check made out to Earthpaint accepted for payment.

FlatCan Recycling http://www.flatcanrecycling.com will also be on site to collect aerosol spray cans and single-use (14-16 once) propane tanks. 

The OCSWMD will fully subsidize residents’ first 10 items brought in for recycling. For additional items residents pay $1/can and $2/propane tank. Accepted aerosol products include spray paints, insecticides, auto care/lubricants, personal care products, household cleaners and food products.
