Pamlico County cuts recycling program

Starting August 1st, Pamlico County will close six of its seven recycling sites as part of budget cuts due to widespread inflation.

The Pamlico County Board of Commissioners expects to save $100,000, but many residents feel it will cause more hassle than benefit.

“It is a bit inconvenient. Usually, I can walk next door to take our recycling on Thursdays, and now we’ll have to load up the van and drive it over to Grantsboro,” said Bayboro resident Rachel Prescott.

Oriental restaurant owner Brantley Norman understands the budget cuts but says the closures will cost him more.

“It’s going to cost us an extra pickup each week. A couple of hundred extra bucks a month adds up for a small business like ours,” said Norman.

Recycling sites closing include Reelsboro, Oriental, Arapahoe, Hobucken, Bayboro, and Vandemere. Starting August 5, the Grantsboro Recycling Site will be the sole location, open weekdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
