Recycling worker injured in Oakland explosion

OAKLAND — A recycling worker was injured Tuesday in an explosion that happened as collected materials were being processed on his truck, authorities said.

The explosion was reported about 7:55 a.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of Moss Avenue.

Police said a California Waste Solutions employee had just placed recycled materials collected from a bin in the crusher at the rear of his truck when a loud explosion happened, causing him to be injured.  A company spokesperson said that according to witnesses, the employee, a driver, was thrown into the air.

He was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Debris was scattered along the street. The cause of the explosion is under investigation; Officer Johnna Watson said the Alameda County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad have “been requested to the scene to assess the incident and provide their expertise.”

Officials said the truck was later taken to another site where its load could be dumped safely to allow bomb squad members to sift through the materials to try and determine what caused the explosion.

Streets in the area were shut down while police investigated but were all reopened by 10:45 a.m.  No evacuations were issued.

Company spokesperson Tasion Kwamilele said  its management team was at the hospital providing additional support to the family as needed.  “The safety of our employees is of the utmost importance and well will continue working with local officials as the circumstances surrounding this incident are investigated,” Kwamilele said.
