Richmond Heights Signed Curbside Recycling Contract with WM

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Richmond Heights City Council meeting held Tuesday decided to sign a two-year contract for automated garbage and recyclables collection with Waste Management (WM) - the city’s waste contractor for the past several years. The contract could be extended for additional three years, if agreed upon by the parties.

The Council passed the resolution by a 6-0 vote. Councilman-at-Large Daniel Ursu was not present.

As per the agreement, Richmond Heights will have to make additional payment of 58 cents per month for every household for curbside recyclable collection. This amounts to an annual payment of $44,000. In addition, the city will pay $14.93 per household for garbage collection. The cumulative payment for recyclable and garbage collection will be around $644,000 next year. However, residents will not be burdened with additional taxes, said Mayor Kim Thomas.

He noted that the city wants its residents to be fully educated on the importance and need for recycling. With this goal, it plans to launch a recycling awareness and education campaign over the period of next two weeks, so as to make them ready for recycling. The residents will be offered a pamphlet as well as a video, which will list out the items that can and cannot be recycled. In addition, interactive sessions will be conducted at various locations where residents could get their queries answered.
