SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Rumpke Waste & Recycling announced acquisition of Sanitation Service Inc. - a 63-year old family-run waste hauler that owns a landfill and transfer station in Illinois.
According to Brian Haynes, owner of Sanitation Service, it has become extremely difficult for small businesses to operate a landfill, owing to changing regulations. For instance, the post-closure liability for Landfill 33, which was five years when it started operating it in 1981, has now been increased to 30 years. Despite challenges, it has outlasted many other single family-owned landfills in the region, he noted.

Ohio-based Sanitation Service operates 14 landfills, 14 recycling centers and 25 transfer stations. The company has been expanding over the past several years. In 2016, it had acquired a local waste hauler, Sutter Sanitation, thereby expanding its portfolio of curbside pickup contracts as well as landfill and transfer station management services.
Haynes stated that it will continue to offer same level of service to Effingham County customers. The change in ownership will not affect the disposal rates and service days. The employees of Sanitation Service will stay in their respective roles, he added.
Rumpke employs over 4,000 people and provides services to more than 1.9 million customers.
