Sewickley officials have chosen a spot they hope will become a permanent glass recycling hub for the Quaker Valley community at large.
Council voted 8-0 on Feb. 8 to recommend a portion of a Riverfront Park lot, near the park’s playgrounds, as the site for Quaker Valley Council of Government’s recycling program.
Councilwoman Anne Willoughby was absent.
The borough previously considered the lot near the ballfields and across the street from an apartment complex, but decided against it after it was determined that the property was owned by a railroad company.
Council went with the site used for the COG’s pop-up recycling events the past few years.
“It’s accessible from (Route) 65, and we’ve had good success there in the past at the pop-up events,” council vice president Julie Barnes said about the selection. “Sewickley collected the highest tonnage of glass of all the pop-up events.”
Council members had expressed concerns about broken glass at the site.
Public works crews would be tasked to check on it at least once a day in order to keep it safe.
The site would be available to all Quaker Valley COG communities if its board approved the recommendation.
That would include Aleppo, Avalon, Bell Acres, Bellevue, Ben Avon, Edgeworth, Emsworth, Glen Osborne, Glenfield, Haysville, Kilbuck, Leet, Leetsdale, Sewickley and Sewickley Heights.
Councilman Tom Rostek said many residents support glass recycling efforts and he hopes COG officials accept Sewickley’s recommendation.
“It’s something that we’ve been working on for a while, and I’m happy to see it come to fruition,” Rostek said.
The next COG meeting is Feb. 16.
Barnes, Sewickley’s COG representative, said she is unsure if there will be a vote on the recycling site at that meeting.

Sewickley officials are looking for a new emergency management coordinator.
Borough manager Donna Kaib said coordinator Jed VonHofen informed the borough that he no longer wants to serve in that capacity. He does plan to stay on and help with the transition to a new coordinator.
