SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Sioux City Council has approved a 10-year garbage contract with Gill Hauling, Inc., covering solid waste collection, recycling and disposal services.
The new contract promises bi-weekly curbside recycling pickup. The proposed amendment to the contract called for re-evaluation of the bi-weekly recycling schedule at the end of the first year. Both the agreement and the amendment were approved by a 4-1 vote. The only vote against the contract was from Mayor Bob Scott, who disagreed on the long tenure of the contract, saying that it is not fair to tie the future councils to the contract.

Commenting on the new agreement, Councilwoman Julie Schoenherr noted that the new bi-weekly curbside recycling schedule will boost city’s efforts to go greener. The move will reduce the number of trips made by trucks over city streets, thus leading to less fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions.
As part of the new contract, all serviced locations will receive new 95-gallon solid waste container and a 95-gallon recycling container. This will cost the household $17.30 per month beginning July this year. The option of two 65-gallon containers will cost $16 per month. Also, additional solid waste container will cost $4.25 per month.
