Officials in Southern Shores have reached an agreement with the company handling its recyclables that may keep them from going to an incinerator.

The town announced Friday it had reached an agreement with Bay Disposal resulting in its recycling material being delivered to a recycling facility in Portsmouth, Virginia. Recycling & Disposal Solutions of Virginia, or RDS, agreed to accept the material delivered to them by Bay Disposal, including glass.

Back in December, Bay Disposal notified the town that because of changes in the recycling market, the company  no longer had a place to deliver collected materials.  Since then, Bay has been taking the town’s recycling material to a waste-to-energy facility also in Portsmouth, Virginia.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to work together to find a way to start recycling again. As the first municipality in Dare County to establish a recycling program, we recognize how important it is to our citizens and property owners,” Deputy Town Manager and Planning Director Wes Haskett said in a statement.

The Southern Shores Town Council amended its contract with Bay Disposal during its meeting on Aug. 18.  The changes allow for another recycling facility if RDS should become unavailable. If other recycling facilities are unavailable, the materials are then to be taken to a waste-to-energy facility.

Bay Disposal in not permitted to place any noncontaminated recycling material in a landfill.

The change adds $5,701 to the original annual contract amount of $189,500.

The town said it serves about 2,800 homes as part of its recycling contract.
