Spring Residential Electronics Recycling Event in Champaign-Urbana Dates Announced

The city of Champaign has announced that it will host its Spring Residential Electronics Collection Event over two days: Friday, May 21, 2021 AND Saturday, May 22, 2021.

Pre-registration is required to participate; online registration will open on April 12.

As in previous events in recent years, area residents can sign up for a 15-minute time slot to drop off their used electronic items for recycling, free of charge.

To register, simply visit the collection website beginning April 12. If you need assistance with registering, please email recycling@champaignil.gov on April 12. As part of your registration, you will select one of the 15-minute time slots to bring your items. This helps keep wait times to a minimum.

The registration procedure has cut down on long wait times that had been the norm in previous events before the registration system was put in place. If you haven’t been to this event in a long time, the operation has been streamlined significantly.

There is a four television limit per person/postcard and a seven item total limit. This collection event is the only cost-free, local option to dispose of an older, tube-style television; all types of televisions are accepted. (Small items can be bundled or put into a small box and counted as only one item.)

Detailed information on what is accepted and what isn’t accepted is available at the registration website.

COVID-19: IMPACT AND PRECAUTIONS

The spring 2020 Residential Electronics Collection event here was cancelled due to restrictions related to Covid-19 and the stay-at-home order in place at that time. The City of Champaign was able to successfully hold its collection event in October 2020.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, necessary safety precautions may remain in place for May 2021, but that information will be released closer to the date. (During the October 2020 event, participating residents were asked to remain in their vehicle at all times during the event, and to wear a mask to remain protected when their vehicle door opens for the event workers to collect electronics from your vehicle, or if it is necessary at any point to speak with an event worker.)

The event will take place at Parkland College, 2400 W. Bradley Avenue in Champaign. A map of the specific location within the Parkland campus will be provided on your confirmation postcard.
