SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Solid Waste Association of North American (SWANA) announced that it has joined the Canada Plastics Pact (CPP), a part of Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Plastics Pact Network. The association is already a member of the U.S. Plastics Pact.
The partnership with CPP fits with SWANA’s mission to emphasize resource management over solid waste management, said Amy Lestition Burke, CEO and Executive Director, SWANA. The members of the Association provide critical roles in collecting and processing plastics, so as to enable recycling, thereby plastic pollution, she said.

The CPP targets to ensure that at least 50% of the plastic packaging is effectively recycled or composted and achieve 30% recycled content in plastic packaging. It aims to have 100% of plastic packaging to be designed to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
Cher Mereweather, managing director, CPP, in a statement welcoming SWANA, said that a holistic strategy comprising of both upstream as well as downstream solutions is required to eliminate plastic waste.
Launched in 2021, CPP’s total membership has now crossed more than 100. The signatories to the Pact include companies such as Emterra and TerraCycle. Also, various provincial recycling groups including the Association of Plastic Recyclers too are its implementation partners.
