Task force formed to update recycling plant regulations amid safety fears

A new task force is being formed to update a 12-year-old ordinance concerning metal and auto parts recycling plants.

he initiative, requested last November by District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo, aims to address safety and environmental concerns that have directly impacted residents.

Recent incidents of fires at metal and auto recycling plants have raised alarm among community members.

"It hurts us as a community to see these people who work so hard all their lives not be able to come home for 2 or 3 days, and to have their kids hurting because of the smoke coming from the recycling center," said Rudy Lopez, Vice President of the Thompson Neighborhood.

In response, the city is considering updates to fire prevention codes for these establishments. The task force will focus on several key areas: resolving citations, imposing fines for recurring violations, and adding air monitors to improve environmental safety.

The task force will comprise 20 members, with 10 chosen by the city and 10 experts in relevant fields. Some council members advocate for additional representatives from Districts 4 and 5 to ensure adequate local representation.

The goal is for the task force members to be selected by July, with recommendations expected by January 2025.
