SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) announced plans to update the emissions rule for landfills in 2025. The agency will issue a proposed rule updating air emission standards for municipal solid waste landfills in the country.
The proposed rule to update its Clean Air Act is considered as an effective measure to address emissions and reduce harmful air pollution. The updated rule will be applicable to existing as well as new municipal solid waste landfills, thus resulting in significant reduction in harmful landfill gas emissions. This would be the first update to the Clean Air Act emission standards since 2016.
The announcement follows repeated calls from several environmental groups and lawmakers to the agency to issue an update. The regulation is due to be update din August this year, but EPA is feared to go past this deadline by a few months.
The Biden administration has been giving top priority to address methane emissions from various sources, as methane has proved to be a more dangerous pollutant. As per studies, the global warming potential of methane is about 80% more powerful than carbon dioxide on a timescale of 20 years.
