California Lawmakers Approved Updates to Recycling Rules

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The California state lawmakers have approved an update to the new bottle laws, expanding the items that could be recycled. It must be noted that the Senate Bill 353 had received approval of the legislature late Thursday. The bill now head to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk for final signature.

The new update to the bottle recycling law will add fruit and vegetable juice containers to the list of acceptable materials. Although the program had seen expansions to include soda, beer and wine bottles, larger juice and vegetable containers were not part of the program until now. The update is likely to add approximately 200 million containers per year into the recycling stream.

Senator Bill Nodd, who proposed the bill, noted that new update will provide much needed boost to California’s beverage container recycling program. It will significantly reduce the volume of plastic and glass that end up in landfills. Moreover, it will uplift the recycling program alongside providing a financial lifeline to recyclers, he added.

Mark Murray, Executive Director, Californians Against Waste observed that the measure will increase consumer recycling opportunities. All juice beverages, irrespective of the size of the container will be provided with a refund.
