South Whidbey to Roll Out Curbside Recycling Program


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Coupeville, Washington- based waste management services firm Island Disposal, Inc. seeks to roll out residential curbside recycling program in South Whidbey in 2024. The company offers residential curbside recycling services to the town of Coupeville and to customers residing in naval housing areas.

The curbside recycling program will collect a wide range of materials including mixed paper, cardboard, Plastic PET #1 & HDPE #2 bottles and jugs, aluminum and tin. However, glass materials won’t be accepted as it would contaminate the entire recyclables if collected as part of a commingled recycle program.

Andrew Riggs, Site Manager, Island Disposal stated that the company is currently carrying out internal cost studies in order to prepare a proposal to be presented before the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission for their final approval and further implementation. As per current plans. the curbside recycling will be picked up every other week. The cost of service has not been decided yet.

Riggs added that glass must remain in its own waste stream. Most companies which have collected glass in commingled or single-stream programs have been forced to re-evaluate their acceptance criteria for the material, he added.
