SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The North Lincoln Sanitary Service (NLSS) announced publication of its annual recycling report for the previous year.
According to the 2023 Opportunity to Recycle Report, compiled on behalf of the City, a total of 2,832 tons of mixed recycling were diverted from the landfill from January to November 2023. This compares with 2,841 tons diverted in 2022.
Addressing the Lincoln City City Council meeting, Lexi Howell, North Lincoln Sanitary Service Sustainability Coordinator noted that the residential participation rate for 2023 was 82%, whereas the commercial participation rate stood at 38%. In one of the biggest changes last year, the city recycling center had accepted all types of batteries free of charge, in a bid to keep lithium-ion batteries out of waste stream.
Since the launch of mixed compost program for residential customers in 2021, NLSS has collected 5,724 tons of mixed compostables from the curb. Out of these, 1,945 tons were collected during January to November last year. Following the success of the program, it launched a Commercial Compost Pilot Program in October 2022 with Pelican Brewery and added Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital (SNLH) and Salishan Resort last year.
The robust recycling rates are the result of educational and outreach efforts by NLSS members.
