SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Anchorage is running a pilot program, centred on the old transfer station and administrative office, through the end of October this year, aimed at diverting plastics and organics out of landfill. The City had moved the Midtown Transfer Station into a brand new facility.

The Materials Recovery Facility accepts materials like grass clippings, small yard debris, and other organics at a cost of $20 per truckload or $40 for a truck and trailer from residents as well as commercial companies. Also, food scraps can be dropped for free at a bin placed outside the facility. Instead of dumping in landfill, the collected organic material will be trucked to a farm in Palmer.
The facility accepts plastics numbered 1, 2 and 5. In addition to plastic containers, it will also accept plastic clamshells. The collected plastics will be ground down and recycled into new product.
The Materials Recovery Facility also houses a new wood lot, partly funded with a grant from the Anchorage Fire Department. Located off East 56th Avenue in Midtown Anchorage across from the current Central Transfer Station, it will remain open Thursday- Saturday from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.
