Lafayette, LA Launched New Recycling Tag Program


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Lafayette Consolidated Government Public Works Department’s Environmental Quality Division and Acadiana Waste Services have announced launch of new warning tag that will be used to flag recycling carts that contain unacceptable items. The move is aimed at improving recycling in Lafayette.

The Recycling Tag Program has been rolled out with the aim of educating residents about recycling and reducing the amount of contamination, thus contributing to environmental sustainability.

The recycling carts found containing contaminated waste will receive a warning tag. For the first violation, it will provide detailed information about the contamination and necessary instructions for proper recycling. For the second violation also, a warning will be issued. Following a third violation, the recycling cart will be removed.

The recyclable items include cans such as aluminum beverage cans, steel and tin cans, paper such as mixed paper, newspaper, magazines, cardboard and plastic containers such as plastic bottles and jugs. The cans and plastic containers must be emptied and rinsed. The paper items must be dry.

The Lafayette recycling program covers nearly 23,000 residents. The program collects approximately 533 tons of recycling every year.
