New Initiative to Keep Hard-to-Recycle Items from Endangering Landfills

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Next month, a number of Lake County cities will introduce a new recycling program designed to supplement the present one and keep difficult-to-recycle materials out of landfills.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO), in collaboration with Reynolds Consumer Products of Lake Forest and Lakeshore Recycling Systems, is introducing the Hefty Renew Program. The program's main objective is to gather a variety of materials, such as plastic bags, bubble wrap, takeaway containers, chip bags, and foam egg cartons.

According to Walter Willis, executive director of SWALCO, the program will be available in the following municipalities starting next month: Bannockburn, Deerfield, Gurnee, Highland Park, Highwood, Lake Villa, Lincolnshire, North Chicago, and Riverwoods; in addition, the townships of Avon, Moraine, Shields, Warren, and West Deerfield will offer it.

The participants of the program are required to collect accepted items in orange bag, which when full, could be placed in recycling bin or cart alongside loose recyclables. The bags will be available at Jewel-Osco, Menards, Sunset Foods and Ace Hardware beginning October.

The program has prevented almost 2,800 tons of difficult-to-recycle plastics from ending up in landfills since its launch in 2018.
