The city will utilize the grant money to build a new recycling center in the area of Joseph Street, Elkahatchee Street and Russell Road, which the city expects to be up and running by around the same time next year. The facility will have multiple bins along its side for citizens to drop off recyclable items including electronics, tin cans, aluminum cans and plastic. Moreover, the facility will have two compactor machines- one for cardboard and the other for plastic.
In order to ensure increased participation by residents, the center will remain open to public 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The earlier recycling center at the city’s Public Works’ facility used to remain closed during the weekends.
Lance LeFleur, Director, ADEM noted that the grants will have a tremendous impact on recycling in Alabama. The efforts will promote reuse of discarded materials, thus reducing the volume of waste entering the landfills, he added.
