Circular Materials Launched First Phase of EPR for Packaging and Paper Products in Alberta

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Phase 1 of the extended producer responsibility (EPR) initiative for paper and packaging materials was introduced in Alberta by Circular Materials. Top government officials, together with executives from business and industry, attended the celebration of the milestone achievement, which was hosted at the City of Edmonton's Kennedale East Facility.

In two stages, Alberta will transition to the entire EPR system. More than 200 localities will be covered in the first phase. Approximately 45 localities are included in this, where Circular Materials will start directly managing recycling services right away. Circular Materials will continue to manage the recycling collection for the remaining towns as a service provider. All areas without recycling services as of November 30, 2022, will be included in the second phase, which will begin in October of the following year.

"The new system will encourage more efficient use of materials and keep more waste out of landfills without creating additional costs or forcing any recycling changes for Albertans," said Rebecca Schulz, Alberta's Environment and Protected Areas Minister.

Under EPR, the company that supplies paper and packaging will be in charge of managing and financing end-of-life services for those materials.
