City of Phoenix Considers New Plans to Reduce Landfill Waste

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Phoenix has said that it will take into account fresh ideas to cut down on landfill garbage. By 2030, the city hopes to divert 50% of its garbage from landfills; by 2050, it hopes to achieve zero waste.

There are two R&D pilot programs in the strategy. The first initiative focuses on waste that winds up in black bins and specific types of plastic objects that are difficult to recycle. These waste materials will be transformed into biodiesel fuel via the initiative. Sludge and biosolids would be processed in the second pilot to create liquid fertilizer and biocrude oil, among other goods.

The 2.5 acres of city-owned property close to 35th Avenue and Elwood Street will be used for the implementation of the two projects indicated above. To do this, Krause Interior Architecture, Inc. and its partners must come to an agreement with the City Council. It is anticipated that diverting massive amounts of rubbish from landfills will generate a source of income for the city and create a large number of job opportunities.

The current garbage diversion rate in Phoenix is approximately 36%, which is much higher than the 32% national average, according to Felipe Moreno, director of public works for the city.
