Coca-Cola Announced New 2035 Packaging Sustainability Goals

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Coca-Cola revealed new 2035 packaging sustainability targets. These take the place of its previously stated 2025 and 2030 targets for reusable packaging, recyclable content, and recyclability.

According to the recently declared targets, main packaging materials like plastic, glass, and aluminum must contain 35%–40% recycled material. The goal is to raise the percentage of recycled plastic to between 30% and 35%. In order to collect at least 70% to 75% of the comparable number of bottles and cans that reach the market each year, the company also plans to form partnerships. The business pledged to keep investing in reusable packaging, but it made no mention of particular reuse goals.

In addition to advancing the target year, the recently announced aims also reduce the previously stated targets. For example, the business promised to recycle all of its packaging by 2030 as part of its World Without Waste campaign in 2018. This goal has since been revised to up to 75% by 2035.

Coca-Cola mentioned the absence of well-designed collection systems and the difficulties with recycling that differ between jurisdictions.

In the meantime, Break Free from Plastic condemned the lower reuse targets announced by the company. The company has reported drastic dip in share of reusable packaging further to its 25% reuse pledge, which shows serious lack of intent from the part of the company.
