Colorado to Launch Statewide Free Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The approval for the Producer Responsibility Program by the Joint Budget Action Committee will pave way for creation of a new recycling program in Colorado. The proposed statewide free recycling program will result in increased access to recycling program for hundreds of thousands of state residents.

According to the program, the manufacturers of products packaged in single-use materials such as foods, beverages and other items are required to pay a fee. This fee will be utilized towards implementation of a new scheme, by which residents having access to curbside trash pickup will be provided free curbside recycling pickup as well.

The recently conducted studies indicate that approximately 500,000 additional households are likely to receive curbside recycling in municipalities. Also, around 100,000 to 200,000 households in other areas will receive curbside recycling services. The program will offer free recycling for residents of condo and apartment buildings. Additionally, HOA communities are likely to receive discounts on their recycling costs.

Henry Stiles of advocacy group Environment Canada hoped that the program will help in keeping plastics and recyclable waste out of waterways in future.

Meantime, a few grocery industry companies criticized the legislation, warning that improper implementation of the same could increase product costs back onto consumers.
