Detroit’s Expanded Solid Waste Collection to Take Effect June 3


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The expanded solid waste collection schedule as a result of the newly approved trash hauler contract by the City of Detroit Department of Public Works (DPW) will take effect June 3.DPW had entered into a new contract with Priority Waste.

As per existing schedule, Detroit residents are offered curbside trash pickup on a weekly basis. Meantime, bulk, recycling and yard waste are picked up on a bi-weekly basis. Vacant property pick up also runs on a bi-weekly schedule.

Priority Waste will collect refuse for residents in neighborhoods east of Woodward and in Southwest Detroit beginning June 3. All other collections will be on the same day of the week as trash collection. The refuse collection on the west and northwest sides of the city will be carried out by Waste Management.

Under the expanded contract terms, trash in Courville containers will be collected weekly. The collection of bulk items, recycling and yard waste will take place on a weekly basis. The vacant property pick up will occur every week. The new additions to the service include household renovation debris and side street debris.

The five-year contracts with Waste Management and Priority Waste will service 133,000 households and 94,000 households respectively. The annual cost for both the contracts is $40 million.
