Dormant Hampden Waste Facility Set to Reopen

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): A reopening is planned for the dormant Municipal Waste Solutions waste-processing facility in Hampden. Maine's recycling efforts will be greatly aided by the facility's reinstatement after it was closed in 2020. Innovative Resource Recovery collaborated with the Municipal Review Committee to reopen the plant.

The Committee stated that beginning next month, the facility will begin to take waste. When the facility reopens, it will first serve as a transfer station. To separate materials like paper, metals, and plastics, the facility has optical sorters. The facility's initial goal is to divert 50% of its trash, with the goal of increasing that to 70–80% in the future. By the end of the year, it is anticipated that the recycling activities will be fully operational.

Large amounts of recyclables combined with garbage have ended up in landfills as a result of the absence of a waste processing facility during the previous five years. An estimated 26,000 tons of domestic garbage are produced annually. The facility will significantly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills annually by reaching a 50% diversion rate.

Once the plant is completely functioning, residents of up to 115 communities won't have to separate recyclables. By 2026, a waste-to-energy device that converts organic materials into useful electricity will also be installed at the plant.
