SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced approximately $2 billion in funding for local projects, including waste-related projects, as part of its Community Challenge Grants program. The program offers funding for various initiatives including composting, recycling and household waste management among others. The funding comes from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
The program invites applications for two specific categories- “Waste reduction and management to support a circular economy” and “safe management and disposal of solid and hazardous waste”. The application period will be open for a period of one year and will close on 21st November, 2024. The applications received will be reviewed on a rolling basis, said the EPA press release.

The rolling basis review allows applicants to make use of technical assistance and resubmit the application if they wish to, in case the application is not selected initially.
According to Michael Regan, EPA Administrator, the historic and unprecedented funding promises to turn disadvantaged and overburdened areas into healthy, resilient, and thriving communities for current and future generations. The projects should lead to cleaner communities and lower emissions from waste, he added.
