SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Mitchell City Council announced that it is considering awarding a bid for $2.1 billion submitted by WS Construction Management, LLC towards a new recycling transfer facility. A total of four bids were submitted, out of which WS Construction Management’s bid was the lowest.

As per the City’s project, its recycling transfer facility will be shifted to Mitchell’s regional landfill. This will make the operations more efficient. Furthermore, it will significantly reduce costs for the city, said Joe Schroeder, Public Works Director.
A grant of $1 million was awarded to the city for construction of the new recycling building. Almost 50% of the total project costs were covered by a grant from the state Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The city crew will sort recycled materials before they are transported to Sioux Falls by Millennium Recycling, with whom the city is in contract to receive recycled materials.
The Mitchell City’s current recycling facility is located far from landfill. The transportation of non-recyclable materials from the facility to landfill incurs additional expenses, as the landfill is situated at a distant location.
The City’s switch to single-stream recycling has resulted in significant increase in participation rates by residents.
