SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) announced that it has entered into an agreement with Spain-based Contenur on on-street waste bins.
This is part of the pilot programme launched in a part of Manhattan in accordance with the citywide containerization strategy. The ten-year contract is worth $7 million and is expected to secure up to 1,500 bins for large residential buildings. Initially, the bins would be used in Manhattan Community Board 9.

The agency has put forward a new rule for residential buildings with one to nine units, which makes it mandatory for such buildings to place their trash in wheeled waste bins from Otto, beginning June next year.
It must be noted that Mayor Eric Adams has been promoting containerization, in replacement of the strategy where trash and recycling are placed loose on the sidewalk. It is only one of the many changes being proposed to revamp sanitation in New York City.
The owners of small residential buildings can use their own bins, if they are not too big. Those having such bins with lids will have time until 1 June, 2026 to buy the DSNY bins. Those having no such bins and place their trash and recycling in bags are required to purchase the newly proposed bins by Nov. 12, when the rule is scheduled to take effect.
