In support of the actions outlined in the plan, the DEC has already awarded nearly $2.9 million in grant funding to 23 municipalities across the state towards establishing or expanding food scrap recycling facilities and programs. Also, it has awarded nearly $2.2 million in grant funding to 47 emergency food relief organizations, which in turn will be used towards purchase of equipment such as trucks, refrigerated vehicles, freezers and refrigerators.
The proposed steps to advance waste reduction efforts are aimed at moving New York into an 85 percent total waste stream recycling rate by 2050. DEC will engage more closely with reuse partners across the state, in order to ensure that materials are reused to the maximum extent possible.
The DEC had released a draft of the plan for public review in March 2023. The final plan has been released after incorporating revisions and clarifications based on the DEC’s review of approximately 1,400 comments from various stakeholders.
