The New York City has gathered roughly 130,000 tons of organic material in fiscal year 2024 ended June 30, 2024. This is a 24% increase over the preceding fiscal year. The debris gathered from the curbside programs in Brooklyn and Queens is included in the collection figure above.

Over the past few months, the city has increased its capacity for processing organic materials. In January of this year, it announced an expansion of the city-owned Staten Island Composing Facility, which is anticipated to deliver 2,000% surge in its annual processing capacity. Contracts to increase the capacity for processing organic materials were given to three businesses: WM, Denali Water Solutions, and American Recycling.

Roughly one-third of New York City's organic waste is anticipated to be composted thanks to the new contracts for organics processing.
