SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority (SOCRRA) aims to improve curbside recycling for residents belonging to 12 cities covered by it. A pilot program, named ‘Feet on the Street’, will be launched next month, it said.
As per announcement, the pilot program will be initially introduced in Oak Park early next month, followed by Berkley and Troy during the spring season. The program will employ workers on field to inspect the recycling bins for presence of non-recyclable items in bins. If found, the property owners will be notified about the same. In addition, SOCCRA will also carry out a direct mail and social media campaign to educate residents on what items are recyclable and what are not, so as to reduce contamination in bins.
One of the most commonly items found in residential bins are plastic bags, which tend to hinder the working of sorting machines and even causing shutdowns. Other commonly found contaminants include coat hangers, Styrofoam bits, trash and yard waste. The bin contamination rate is estimated at around 15%. The pilot program will help SOCCRA to collect exact data of contaminants and educate residents accordingly.
SOCCRA had recently received a grant of $170,000 from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).
