SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Reworld is reported to have notified local authorities via letter that it will be closing its mass burn facility in Marion County, Oregon, on December 31, 2024. For a few months now, the business has been issuing warnings about the possibility of the factory closing.
The corporation gave the County Board of Commissioners four alternatives earlier in August of this year, one of which was to close the facility. The other choices were to buy the facility from it, lease the creation of a transfer station, or let the corporation sell the facility to a third party.
There would only be one sizable waste-to-energy facility on the West Coast, in Spokane, Washington, following the closure of the Reworld facility. Later this year, two large burn facilities run by Reworld in California are set to close.
The Reworld Marion facility, which was constructed in the 1980s, can process about 550 tons of waste every day. On the West Coast, it is the only medical waste incinerator still in operation. The Oregon healthcare system would be forced to transport medical waste to Kansas City for processing if the facility is closed.
Meanwhile, representatives from the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality stated that Reworld has not yet provided them with a detailed shutdown plan.
