SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Racine will open a new trash and recycling facility this month. The new facility at 6300 21st St. will serve as both a Waste Transfer Station and Residential Drop-Off Facility and will boost waste and recycling operations in addition to serving as a location for residents to drop off their waste.

The City had decided to build the new facility as part of its long-term strategy to deal with solid waste more efficiently, especially after the closure of Kestrel Hawk Landfill on 21st Street. The construction activities on the facility, which began in spring 2023, came to a completion last month. The construction project generated around 15,000 hours of work for Racine residents.
The City decided to go ahead with building of the new facility, after considering several other options, such as delivery of garbage by city trucks directly to landfills, privatizing the waste pickup and disposal services etc. However, these options were finally dropped as they were more expensive.
According to the City press release, the garbage and recycling will be collected from homes by city-owned trucks and delivered to the new facility, where they will be compacted. The waste will be picked up and hauled to a landfill in Franklin, whereas the recyclable materials will be transported to a Germantown facility.
