Ottawa Master Plan to Extend Life of Trail Road Landfill

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The newly approved Ottawa’s Solid Waste Master Plan is expected to deliver significant reduction in the amount of garbage going to the landfill. The master plan, originally introduced in November last year, was approved Tuesday by councillors on the environment and climate change committee

The plan aims to cut the volume of garbage reaching the landfill by around 31,000 tonnes over the next three decades, in addition to diverting more than a million tonnes of material. Consequently, it foresees extension of life of Trail Road Waste Facility by additional 14 years. The city is likely to save enormous money by way of extending the landfill life, even by a year.

Capital Ward Coun. Shawn Menard, chair of the committee noted that the master plan is likely to save more than $120 million in landfill life.

The plan also includes Ottawa’s newly proposed three-item trash limit, which has already received Council approval. Also, it covers other recommendations regarding mandatory organic waste collection in multi-residential buildings and the launch of a pilot project aimed at improvement of recycling options in parks.

The implementation of the Solid Waste Master Plan would require capital investment of nearly $346 million. Furthermore, it will result in an increase in annual waste collection costs by around $20 million by 2031.
