Pocatello, ID to Invest in Western Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Pocatello, Idaho plans to spend around $2.7 million towards acquisition and renovation of the Western Recycling baling facility on Garrett Way, as part of its committed efforts to deliver improved local curbside recycling program.

The City plans to utilize Sanitation Department reserve funds to engage with two recycling companies to obtain the large facility and property and other necessary equipment owned by Republic Services, with whom the City has been in touch to explore ways to reduce recycling overheads while protecting environment.

Tom Kirkman, Director of Public Services, while addressing the City Council, said that it would prefer baling their products, which eventually will help the city to reduce baling costs significantly. The baled materials will then be shipped to Republic Services facility, where they will be sorted and processed. The City will be paid for the value of commodities, Kirkman noted.

The costs associated with curbside recycling program has witnessed significant decline during recent times, mainly due to rising commodity rates. Also, the Pocatello residents have been very passionate about curbside recycling, which makes the investment meaningful, added Kirkman.
