SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Redwood Materials will partner with Ultium Cells- the joint battery manufacturing venture between GM and LG Energy Solution to recycle production scrap for GM’s electric vehicles. The partnership will recycle cathode, anode and cell scrap from Warren, Ohio and Spring Hill, Tennessee facilities.
Redwood Materials had received a loan of $2 billion to construct its Nevada battery recycling facility from the Department of Energy (DoE), as a direct impact of the Inflation Reduction Act signed in 2022. Also, Ultium Cells too was awarded a loan of $2.5 billion towards developing its U.S. cell manufacturing facilities.

As part of the partnership, Redwood will recycle Ultium’s scrap and process them into high-quality battery materials, which in turn are used by cell manufacturers. The domestic processing of materials is expected to generate big additional revenue. It must be noted that most of these materials are shipped to Asian countries for processing.
Redwood will be supplied scrap from Ultium’s two facilities that together produce in excess of 80 GWh battery cells every year. The majority of these scrap will be supplied to Redwood facilities for processing. Meantime, Redwood did not clarify whether it will receive scrap from Ultium’s Michigan facility under construction.
