SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Local governments have sued Republic Services over its acceptance of hazardous waste at its Wayne Disposal landfill. The governments insist on stopping the flow of radioactive waste from New York to the location. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was ordered last week to halt its plans to transport the debris to Michigan by an injunction.
The Wayne Disposal landfill site currently operates on an expired permit. The company is in the process of renewing the permit.

The waste that will be transported to Wayne Disposal is estimated to be 6,000 cubic yards of concrete and polluted soil. The Army Corps of Engineers has said that the garbage has a low radioactivity. Furthermore, they assert that Wayne Disposal has been taking these kinds of waste from all around the nation.
Republic Services made it clear that there is no risk to the community's health or public health from the anticipated trash. The landfill noted in a recent statement that it is built to handle this kind of debris generated through industrial and other processes securely and that it meets or exceeds all necessary regulations.
The governments of Belleville, Romulus, Canton Township, and Van Buren Township have filed lawsuits against the firm since the residents don't appear to be persuaded.
