Startup to Build Solar Recycling Plant in Florida

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): OnePlanet Solar Recycling, a startup company based in Jacksonville, Florida, announced plans to begin construction of a solar recycling facility in Florida. To this end, up to $7 million in funds have been raised. Broken solar panels will be disassembled at the factory to create a fresh domestic supply of precious metals like copper and aluminum.

The complex, known as the River City project, would be situated in Green Cove Springs, just south of Jacksonville, and will require a $90 million investment to build. There will be three stages to the facility's construction. A disassembly line with the capacity to disassemble two million solar modules annually will be part of the first of the three phases. The processing capacity will be tripled to 6 million solar panels annually by 2030.

At the plant, OnePlanet will treat hardware to recover valuable raw materials using its own solar recycling technique. The special method extracts many kinds of materials, which maximizes output and efficiency.

According to Andre Pujadas, CEO of OnePlanet, the most recent artificial intelligence (AI) technology and cutting-edge sensors can recover up to 97% of metal concentrations like copper and aluminum in addition to glass, plastic, and silicon.
