SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Waste Management (WM) will carry out upgrades worth approximately $20 million at its Rochester area hauling station, aimed at lowering its toxic emissions. A ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the project was held at the station premises last week, which was attended among others by State Rep. Tina Liebling and other prominent community leaders.

As part of the initiative, WM will add 36 compressed natural gas vehicles to the fleet. This will reduce the emission of nitrogen oxide by almost 90%, when compared with traditional diesel vehicles. Furthermore, these vehicles will result in lesser noise pollution as they are quieter.
Commenting on the development, Frank Fello, Vice President of WM noted that the move is part of the company’s previously stated long term sustainability goal to free its Minnesota operations from using diesel. The upgraded facility will provide better working environment for its technicians. Moreover, it will set a model for the entire waste disposal industry, Fello added.
WM targets to have 100% of its natural gas fueling infrastructure nationwide is renewable natural gas by 2026.
